What does Green Poop say about your health?

Poop simply means solid waste from the body. Normally, a person's general health can be determined by using their poop appearance. You can also include the frequency with which you visit the bathrooms, as well as the amount of waste that is expelled. The stool comes in a variety of colors, size, shape and texture. There are certain colors, shapes and perhaps stool textures that can be abnormal.

Although the color of poop is usually influenced by our eating habits, the most common colors are browns and sometimes greens. However, there are some unusual stool characteristics that make us seek immediate medical attention. These may include abnormal stool colors, such as persistent green, dark brown, bright red, watery stools (diarrhea), as well as hard stools (constipation) and frequent bathroom visits. With this in mind, I will cover in the next preview what you need to know about the green color in your stool.

What makes your green poop?

The color of the poop is determined by what you eat and by the amount of bile it contains. Once the liver produces bile, it is sent to the gallbladder to be stored, and then released during digestion. Bile is a yellow-green liquid generated by the liver through the bile ducts, which is released into the digestive system and helps break down and digest fats. As the bile pigments pass through your intestinal tract, they are chemically degraded by the enzymes, changing them from green to brown.

So, why is your green poop? Your poop can be green because it has moved quickly through the digestive system and has not fermented properly. In that case, we can say that green stools are caused by an incomplete digestion of bile. Foods that can also cause green stools, and these include green foods, blue or purple foods, spicy foods, coffee, alcohol and other foods rich in chlorophyll. Special conditions such as pregnancy and diarrhea can cause this green color.

When you experience diarrhea, food tends to move too quickly through the digestive tract and, therefore, bile does not have enough time to completely break down.

Pregnant women who are in constant absorption of prenatal supplements such as iron and calcium may experience a green discoloration in their stools. This is because the excess iron can not be completely absorbed by the body, leading to its elimination through bowel movements. Pregnancy can also cause mothers to not hold food in their stomachs for a long time and tend to extract it before it is properly digested. This may be due to stomach disorders and painful digestive disorders such as

Babies and young children can also experience a green coloration in their poop. This could be due to the constant absorption of iron-rich foods such as baby formula, lack of sufficient breast milk or the mother's eating habits.

Foods that cause green poop

As mentioned above, our eating habits can be the main cause of green poop. These include but are not limited to the following:

Dark green leafy vegetables.

These are divided into three categories namely:

Green of cruciferous leaves. These include broccoli, cabbage, cabbage and cauliflower. Spinach and Swiss chard When consumed in excess, they can lead to an incomplete digestion of their fibers and, later, cause a green coloration of the excreta. This should not be a concern, except when it is accompanied by other disorders such as diarrhea. Edible green leaves, such as chickweed, watercress, banana and red clover.

The dark green vegetables are said to be rich in chlorophyll, the pigment that the plant uses to undergo photosynthesis. Its excessive consumption is the main cause of the green coloration of the stool.

The foods are rich in fats.

These include but are not limited to; Avocado, walnuts, almonds, pistachios, butter seeds, salmon, olives, olive oil, dark chocolate, edamame, sunflower seeds, eggs, whole milk, cheese and yogurt. These foods should be consumed in pieces, since an excessive intake could lead to the incomplete decomposition of the bile, therefore, the green color.

Coffee, spicy foods, and alcohol.

As bile travels to the large intestine through the small intestine and bile ducts, its color changes from green to brown. The consumption of many of these foods causes laxative effects in the digestive system, which causes food to move faster through the intestines, which gives the bile a limited time to decompose and, subsequently, prevents the stool change color from green to brown.

Blue and purple foods

Apart from green foods, blue and purple foods can also lead to green poop. These foods include grapes, cranberries and red wine.

Facilitate the consumption of fats that can be harmful to the gallbladder and liver, especially the unhealthy fats that can be found in fried foods and in hydrogenated oils.

Replace unhealthy fats with healthy ones like avocado and coconut oil. We can not override the essential role played by fats in our body and, therefore, remain an essential nutrient in your diet. Coconut oil is one of those fats that do not need bile for proper digestion and is available for the most suitable natural fats, but it should still be taken in considerable quantities.

Increase bile in bolus intake. Ox bile contains many digestive enzymes like humans and, therefore, can improve fat absorption. Alternatively, you can take pancrelipase, an artificial pancreatic enzyme that supports the digestion of fat.

As in the case of pregnant women, the intake of prenatal supplements should be done strictly under the doctor's instructions. This is because too much could end up affecting your newborn too. It is recommended to eat healthy foods that produce natural iron and calcium, such as liver and fish.

The consumption of alcohol should be limited. This will avoid the loose nature of the digestive systems, making the enzymes responsible for digestion and absorption active.

When to consult a doctor about the green stool?

If the green stools persist, or if your bowel movement is strange, you should consult a doctor, especially if accompanied by fever, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. This is recommended if you experience diarrhea, as this condition can lead to the complication of other problems such as dehydration.

Green stools that have mucus can sometimes be a sign of inflammation in the lining of the intestine and may require urgent medical attention. Very serious conditions may require immediate attention, as it could be due to food poisoning. Again, if your poop is green on a regular basis, it could mean that.

Your body does not absorb nutrients properly. You have a bacterial infection

It is always recommended that you do not wait too long if these symptoms persist, as they could cause more serious health complications. Always consult your doctor when you are not sure of these changes in your body, especially when accompanied by green stool.
