Why should not you smoke or drink during pregnancy?
I am a 27 year old woman and I have conceived for the first time. I need to mention that I have some vices, I smoke and I drink. Although I have never faced any healthy crisis due to these habits of mine, my gynecologist warned me that I should stop smoking and drinking. Why are women advised to avoid alcohol and nicotine during pregnancy?
If your doctor has advised you to refrain from smoking and drinking, there are good reasons for that. If you consume alcohol from time to time, you can still rest assured that your baby will be fine while you take those sips, however, once you cross that line, you will be endangering your developing baby. Studies have concluded that drinking alcohol in large quantities during pregnancy can lead to poor growth and inadequate brain development in the baby. In the worst case, it can also cause abnormal facial features in the baby with severe mental retardation. Learn more about How alcohol affects pregnancy
As for smoking is a strict no-no during pregnancy. Smoking exposes the developing fetus to an excess of nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar inside the uterus. This decreases the oxygen supply to the baby, increases the chances of the baby being born with congenital defects, such as cleft palate, or that results in a low birth weight.
Therefore, it is advisable to stay away from cigarettes (including secondhand smoke) and alcohol when you are pregnant.
