What high heels are really doing to your body
Filed in: Beauty.
Millions of women wear high heels almost every day. But what most do not know is that they risk permanent physiological damage to the knees, hips, back and tendons. Yes, high heels are cute, but these shoes can hurt much more than your feet.
The perfect, pointed pair of 4-inch heels can make any outfit, but with this style comes a lot of suffering. High heels have the stigma of being bad for health and comfort, but this hardly prevents women from using them occasionally and frequently on a daily basis. Women often make sacrifices for footwear, but at what price?
Marilyn Monroe once said: "I do not know who invented high heels, but all women owe a lot." But what he did not realize is that many women can attribute whoever started this old trend to their health. problems. Very high heels, flat shoes too low, flip-flops without shoes and pointed shoes or wrong size can cause deformed fingers, painful lumps and bunions, inflamed nerves or bones, ligaments torn or too stretched, even hair fractures.
Researchers from the University of Griffith in Queensland, Australia, had the idea of having a cup of coffee, while they watched a young woman pass by with heels. "It seemed quite uncomfortable and unstable," Dr. Neil J. Cronin, a postdoctoral researcher at the university's musculoskeletal research program, told the New York Times. "We started to consider what might be happening at the muscular and tendinous level."
For the study, published in the January 12 issue of the Journal of Applied Physiology, Cronin and colleagues tested 9 "high-heel users" and studied their walking. These women wore two-inch heels for at least 40 hours a week for a minimum of two years. The researchers compared their strides on a 26-foot platform with strides of 10 young women, who used heels less than 10 hours a week. All the women were from adolescence to 30 years old, and were equipped with electrodes and sensors to study the muscles of the legs.
What did the researchers find?
Those who wore high heels daily walked with shorter and stronger steps, compared to the controls. It was also discovered that heel users have their feet constantly in a flexed and pointed position, so much so that it became a "defect" for their feet, Cronin told the Times. The study found that this position, along with the shortened step, actually caused the calf muscles of the woman to shorten, which led them to exert more pressure on their muscles.
Cronin said that when these women put on more comfortable shoes, such as slippers or flip flops, they face an even greater risk of injury, as they are introducing their deformed feet permanently into a different environment. And since the women in the study were young (25, on average), the number of victims can be quite rapid and the impact could be even worse for older women.
That's not surprising to Dr. Orly Avitzur, medical consultant for Consumer Reports. He has written about the dangers of high heels for years and told HealthPop that he has heard from many women who simply can not wear high heels once they reach 40 because their feet are badly damaged.

How to undo the damage
Yes, heels can affect your feet, hips and back, but you can prevent pain with a few simple movements:
Work the hips. "The more flexible your hips are, the better you can tolerate the stress that heels exert on your body," says Dr. Splichal. "Keep them nimble by doing at least five minutes of hip flexion stretches before and after putting on high heels."
Take out a golf ball. And wind it under the ball, the arch and the heel of your foot for five minutes in the morning and at night. This movement to feel good massages the feet and keeps them flexible.
Do the best. Stand barefoot, letting your heels extend out from the edge. With the weight on the balls of the feet, lower your heels as much as you can, then get up on the toes and slowly return to the starting position. Repeat for approximately 30 repetitions.
Flex your toes. Sit barefoot in a chair and place a towel under your toes. Pull up gently on the ends of the towel, pulling the toes towards the chin. Repeat 10 times on each foot.
Write the alphabet To strengthen your ankles and improve range of motion, use your big toe to trace each letter of the alphabet in italics in the air, moving only your foot and ankle.
Do like a monkey. Place around 20 clips of folder on the floor. With the toes, lift one by one and place it in a cup. This will stretch the bottoms of your feet.
