If you experience it for 2 or 3 days in a row, it is alarming. Hiccups are involuntary, spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, the researchers say.

A sudden and involuntary contraction (spasm) of the diaphragm muscle can be referred to as hiccups. The vocal cords close, producing the hiccup sound when the muscle spasms and are quite embarrassing. Drinking too much and eating too fast can result in hiccups.

The neurologists at Loyola Medicine say that everyone has hiccups at some time or another. But, some people may have hiccups that last longer than a month. Intractable hiccups can happen frequently, but people do not realize it, said Stasia Rouse, a resident of the Chief of Neurology, and assistant professor Matthew Wodziak.

Both intractable hiccups (lasting more than a month) and persistent hiccups (lasting more than 2 days) can be worrisome and are associated with various medical conditions and can hinder their quality of life. It can also affect your eating and sleeping habits.
