Toothpaste, shampoo and body wash: is it worth it to harm your health?

Filed in: Article.

Do you like a shampoo with a rich foam? A shaving cream that really lathe? How about relaxing in a bathtub full of bubbles? These may seem like some of the simple and innocent pleasures of life … until you look at WHAT is causing all that foam and foam. Once you discover it, you can decide that it is not so simple or pleasant after all.

Check the labels on your shampoo, soap, facial cleanser, shaving cream, body wash, or shower gel: Does sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) appear? Or one of your cousins: Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Myreth Sulfate Sodium, etc.? Most manufacturers use these anionic detergents because they produce a large amount of foam at very low cost. But SLS is so strong that it is also used to scrub floors of garages. Worse still, it has been shown to cause long-term cancer. And the American College of Toxicology says that SLS stays in the body for up to five days. Other studies show that it easily penetrates the skin and enters and maintains residual levels in the heart, liver, lungs and brain. However, SLS is found in most cleaning and foaming products, even in some toothpastes!

Most people who sell products with this and other harmful ingredients do not really know it. The FDA has a GRAS list (generally considered safe), and almost everything is there, so most of the people selling these products only focus on hype and what the product is supposed to do for skin (clean it, make it feel soft). , etc.). Unfortunately, of the 7,000 ingredients used on the skin, only 5-6 have been tested for LONG-TERM safety, and none have been tested TOGETHER. Currently, 125 are suspected carcinogens, 20 cause adverse reactions in the nervous system and 25 are related to birth defects.

So, why exactly SLS is so bad?

Here are the tests that show about sodium lauryl sulfate: SLS PENETRATES EYES AND TISSUES: Tests show that SLS can penetrate the eyes, as well as systemic tissues (brain, heart, liver, etc.) and shows long-term retention in these tissues. Especially when used in soaps and shampoos, there is an immediate concern related to the penetration of SLS in the eyes and other tissues. This is especially important in babies, where considerable growth is occurring, because younger eye tissues produce much greater uptake, and SLS changes the amounts of some proteins in the cells of eye tissues. Young eye tissues may be more susceptible to alteration by SLS[1] SLS FORMS OF NITRATES: When SLS is used in shampoos and cleansers that contain nitrogen-based ingredients, it can form carcinogenic nitrates that can enter the bloodstream in large quantities. They can cause eye irritation, skin rashes, hair loss, scraping on the scalp similar to dandruff and allergic reactions.[2] SLS PRODUCE NITROSAMINES: (Potent carcinogens that cause the body to absorb nitrates at levels higher than the consumption of foods contaminated with nitrates such as hot dogs or lunch meat) Dr. David H. Fine, the chemist who discovered the contamination of NDELA in Cosmetics, estimates that a person would be applying 50 to 100 micrograms of nitrosamine to the skin each time they use a cosmetic contaminated with nitrosamine. In comparison, a person who consumes bacon preserved with sodium nitrate is exposed to less than one microgram of nitrosamine. [3] SLS STRIPS HUMIDITY AND SKIN OIL: According to the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, SLS caused damage to the skin and hair, including cracking and severe inflammation of the derma-epidermal tissue. The layers of the skin can separate and become inflamed due to their protein denaturing properties.[4] SLS IRRITATES SCALP AND CAN PROMOTE HAIR LOSS [5] SLS CAN DAMAGE DNA IN CELLS: According to Japanese studies.[6]
