Diabetics have a basic problem: they can not use insulin or use it inefficiently. They need to eat foods that make blood sugar levels constant and do not increase suddenly. (Read more about how diabetes affects the body).

Glycemic index (GI) is an indicator of how much your blood sugar levels will increase when you eat something. When diabetics eat foods with a high GI, there is a sudden increase in their sugar levels. On the other hand, foods with low GI are healthier, since they are rich in vitamins, fibers, minerals, etc. They also provide energy slowly as opposed to high GI foods and keep one full for longer. This helps you lose weight and decrease fat levels. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, brown rice, oats, etc. They are more suitable for diabetics. Below is a sample diet plan for patients with diabetes by Ekta Tandon, nutritionist of the Fitness First chain of gyms.
