Frontline PBS recently presented the documentary The problem with antibioticsAnd, according to the latest statistics, antibiotics in meat are increasing … and so are diseases! Here are some of the alarming numbers:
The United States uses around 30 million pounds of antibiotics each year to raise animals to encourage growth and protect against the unhealthy living conditions of CAFOs (confined feeding operations). This represents 80% of all the use of antibiotics in America!
This exorbitant use of antibiotics increases the risk of disease by promoting the development of resistant strains of antibiotics resistant to antibiotics that can not be defeated with antibiotics and cause at least 23,000 deaths in the United States per year (of the 2 million infected).
This is what is pending in hospital wards across the country. We are seeing an increase in bacteria resistant to notoriously dangerous antibiotics, resistant to methicillin Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA kills more Americans than HIV / AIDS, Parkinson's, emphysema and homicides … combined! Among those diagnosed with MRSA are young and healthy, a trend that suggests that meat contaminated with antibiotics is the culprit. And as more meat is raised with antibiotics, strains of bacteria that are more resistant to drugs and lethal!
For example, hospitals are flooded with cases of antibiotic-resistant urinary tract infections (UTI). When antibiotics do not work, the infection spreads to the kidneys and then to the blood, where sepsis begins, responsible for approximately 40,000 deaths in the United States. UU By year!
Researchers linked more than 100 drug-resistant urinary tract infections to contaminated supermarket meats by using genome sequencing to compare E. coli collected samples of supermarket meats, to E. coli Samples from patients infected with UTI.
How to protect yourself
The use of antibiotics promotes the mutation of bacteria in strains more resistant to antibiotics and threatens the health of each individual. But building resistance is only part of the problem. Meat that is contaminated with drug-resistant bacteria (as in previous UTI cases) can cause disease if not handled properly and cooked enough.
Even more frightening, the research suggests that half of all supermarket meat is contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. If you eat meat, stay away from the meat products of the supermarket and buy only organic meats, fed with grass (grass children) reared without antibiotics.
