Work stress and your health: what the research tells us:
Cardiovascular diseases: Many studies suggest that psychologically demanding jobs that give employees little control over the work process increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Musculoskeletal disorders: Based on research conducted by NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) and many other organizations, it is widely believed that work stress increases the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders of the back and upper extremities. Psychological disorders: several studies suggest that differences in the rates of mental health problems (such as depression and exhaustion) for several occupations are due in part to differences in work stress levels. (Economic and lifestyle differences between occupations can also contribute to some of these problems). Workplace injuries: Although more study is needed, there is growing concern that stressful work conditions interfere with safe work practices and set the stage for workplace injuries.
