But what is the uvula? This organ is that fleshy part, which is placed in the back of the throat. Although it may seem like something that is not so important, the uvula actually consists of glandular and muscular tissue, and saliva channels. This organ helps your throat to stay lubricated. According to some specialists, it is possible that the uvula plays a role in speech. Others believe that our uvula is an organ designed to help swallow food, or even filter bacteria. However, when this is swollen, it is clearly not pleasant or comfortable.

Causes

The most common cause of inflamed uvula is an infection, either bacterial or viral. For example, if you suffer from mononucleosis, also known as kissing disease, strep throat or tonsillitis, you will experience an inflammation in your throat. While your throat is inflamed, your uvula can also become inflamed.

A more dangerous cause of uvulitis is the rare condition called epiglottitis. Generally affecting children, this disease can restrict breathing.

Allergic reactions to insect or food stings are other common causes of uvulitis. In the case of an anaphylactic reaction, your throat swells extremely quickly and emergency medical help is needed.

The uvula can also be irritated by smoking too much, drinking or being exposed to chemicals, and therefore becomes inflamed.

This condition is also common after surgery, due to irritation caused by anesthesia or endotracheal tube trauma.

The symptoms

Usually, when you have uvulitis, you may notice that your uvula is inflamed and is larger than normal. However, many people do not check their throat regularly, but you will surely see that swallowing becomes increasingly difficult, or you have the feeling that something is stuck in your throat. In some cases, your voice may also sound different.

Other symptoms you may experience are:

Sore throat Problems breathing Nausea Excess saliva

Natural medicine

Most of the natural remedies used for uvulitis are those that can cure inflammation. If you notice that an irritant is causing the disease, for example, alcohol or smoking, it is recommended to drink less or stop smoking.

Saltwater

You will not have to drink this liquid, gargle and then spit it out. According to doctors, this will eliminate bacteria and allergens, and will also loosen the thick mucus from the throat.

Garlic and honey

It goes without saying that garlic and honey have antimicrobial properties. If you want to get rid of the inflammation of your uvula, crush some garlic cloves and mix them with honey. This antibiotic solution will relieve the swelling and discomfort of your throat immediately.

Turmeric and ginger

Both spices have anti-inflammatory properties and are beneficial in the case of respiratory infections. A tea made from turmeric and ginger is an effective remedy for uvulitis.

Important: If you suffer from severe uvulitis, consult a doctor as soon as possible. In most cases, the symptoms are mild and can be treated at home, but when the illness is severe, you should seek medical help.
