When it comes to diabetes, you must be very careful with what you should eat and what not, in addition to following strict dietary guidelines. However, including certain foods in the diet can help you regulate glucose levels effectively. And one of those easily available ingredients is bay leaves. Known as tej patta In Hindi, this culinary spice not only helps in the control of blood glucose, but also helps maintain lipidic profile under control.

This is how bay leaves help

According to a study published in the journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition. [1], the bay leaves showed a significant improvement in the function of insulin in people suffering from type 2 diabetes, when it is taken for 30 days. The hypoglycemic effect of bay leaves is attributed to the presence of essential oils and phytochemicals, which improve the metabolism of glucose and insulin. In addition, the active component of these leaves is a polyphenol, which exerts an insulin-enhancing activity, which helps in the effective control of glucose.

Not only that, the bay leaves also showed a 26% reduction in the total cholesterol Including LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol and triglycerides and an increase of around 20% in HDL cholesterol (high density lipoproteins) [1].

How to use it?

For best results, it is advised to take antidiabetic medications and follow the proper dietary guidelines along with the inclusion of bay leaves in the diet. The study [1] revealed that consuming 1 to 3 grams of bay leaves per day for 30 days improves the glucose and lipid profile in type 2 diabetes and, therefore, reduces the risk and complications associated with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. You can add bay leaves in soups and curries to make the most of it. Even adding a spoonful of laurel powder during cooking can help you get the anti-diabetic and anti-cholesterol benefits. So, do not forget to store and consume bay leaves if you have diabetes or suffer from a risk factor for diabetes such as heart disease.
