If you are a fan of acupuncture, it is likely that you have been treated with moxibustion during one of your sessions … and if not, you are missing a highly effective therapy. Moxibustion is an ancient healing technique used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to stimulate blood flow, eliminate blockages that could be causing pain and disease, and strengthen general immunity. Indirect moxibustion (the use of moxa sticks similar to cigars to administer non-contact heat therapy) is not only safer than direct moxibustion (when an acupuncturist burns a small amount of cone-shaped moxa directly on the skin ), but it is also yourself, healing method at home. Spend at least 5 minutes with a moxa stick, and can accelerate the healing of sprains and traumas, colds and cramps … even digestive ailments!

Moxa sticks are rolls resembling cigars stuffed with artemisia grass, a star healing agent used for thousands of years in folk medicine. Research confirms that mugwort increases blood flow, especially in the pelvic area, which is why artemisia is commonly used to stimulate menstruation and relieve menstrual cramps.

According to TCM, blocked chi, which is the energy, or life force, that moves through your body, causes all kinds of physical and mental illnesses. Unblocking this chi so that it flows freely is the basis of TCM healing.

Because it stimulates blood flow and eliminates cold and moisture in the body, moxibustion promotes optimal organ function. The application of heat therapy in the form of moxabustión treats:

How to use a Moxa stick

You are playing with fire when you use a moxa stick, so it is important to follow these guidelines carefully.

Step 1: Light one end of the moxa stick with a lighter or candle. It may be that the moxa takes a little longer to catch the flame. Test to see if you have lit the stick correctly by holding the illuminated end two or three centimeters from the back of your hand. You should feel a nice warmth.

Step 2: Hold the illuminated end two to three centimeters above the area you want to treat. If you have an ankle injury, for example, you will apply heat to the ankle for 5 to 10 minutes. Move the moxa rod slowly over the area, making sure to keep it as close as possible avoiding direct contact with the skin. The tolerance of each person to the heat is different.

If you are dealing with a larger area, use the same method, but expand in a circular motion. For example, if you are treating the lungs due to congestion, flu or allergies, move the moxa rod in slow circles through the lungs.

Note: The ash will fall, so make sure you have a towel and a ceramic or glass plate at hand to catch the ashes and accommodate the moxa stick when necessary.

Step 3: Once you have bathed in heat your specific ailment, turn off the moxa bar in a glass jar. Seal the bottle tightly so that no oxygen enters and the moxa rod can no longer burn. You can also wrap the end of the moxa bar in aluminum foil. Both methods allow you to save the moxa stick for future use.

A word of caution: Traditional moxa sticks come with a poignant smell (reminiscent of marijuana) and a lot of smoke. If you are sensitive to smoke or suffer from an upper respiratory condition, use moxa sticks without smoke to reduce odor and smoke fumes.
